Last week we talked about artisans in premodern China. This story is from present-day Okinawa (Ryukyu islands, Japan). The Shuri-jo castle was destroyed in a fire on Halloween, and there are fears that the shortage of artisans and resources (timber) will make reconstruction very difficult. Transmitting the craft from one generation to the next still requires hands-on experience and apprenticeship.
